Recognising Personal Qualities and Identifying room for Improvement

personal quality you have

why do you value it?

how have you achieved it

.

Dealing with situations diplomatically

I recognise the fact that some people are overlooked on the set of a film but want nothing more than to have their voices heard and opinions appreciated. People respond much better when they are treated fairly and when there is not a strict hierarchy. By using a diplomatic approach, people respect you more because you are showing them respect.

It has always been in my nature to listen to

peoples' views and opinions. More recently

when in directing roles I have applied this.

I have found that using an open mind and being

willing to take criticism or advice from crew

members always works better.

By using this manner I have found that more

people are willing to work with you on other

projects, thus creating a good rapport with

people and opening up doors of opportunity.

2.

Dealing with situations pragmatically

The ability to approach situations with an element of common sense and practicality. Forward thinking, especially on your feet, because problems arise all the time that can catch you off guard.

Sitting back and evaluating the situation in

hand is often better than delving straight in

and messing things up even more. When I have

hit obstacles, rather than going with all guns

blazing I have used a calm manner to work out

what will be better in the long run.

3.

Keeping calm in a pressured environment

When one person on a film set gets rubbed up the wrong way it can really have a nasty effect on the rest of the crew. It is much better to keep a calm approach and assess the situation. Most problems that we face on a film set are always deemed worse than they actually are and 9 times out of 10 they are solvable.

Counting to ten definitely works. There are times

when all you want to do is scream and shout at

someone for doing something wrong but I always

tell myself that these are people you are working

with, so the last thing you really want to do is

upset the atmosphere even more.

When filming the short film 'The Note' there were

definitely times where I wanted to call people

all the names under the sun. But I bit my tongue

because if they are aware themselves that they

have done something wrong, the last thing they

need is for me to rub it in their face even more.

4.

A positive attitude and sense of humor

I always like to put a positive spin on things. Filming can be long and draining and it is important to keep morale up otherwise people will start to flake.

It is important to strike the right balance between

humor and work. Too much humor can mean a

lack of work. But then again, a lack of humor

can mean a lack of work also, because people

aren't enjoying themselves. During the media

event, my nerves were shielded by using humor.

By dressing up as a cowboy and ultimately

making a joke out of myself made it easier.

5.

Determination

It is important to be determined in yourself and be aware of what you can actually achieve. Sometimes peers telling you you're good at something, means nothing in comparison to telling yourself you can do it.

After a pretty poor first year I have really upped

my game in the second year. There were many

times I wanted to throw the towel in last year and

I am so thankful that I did not because I have

proved to myself that I can actually do it when I

put my mind to it. That's not to say that I don't

still slip up every now and then. However, one

pivotal moment this year, providing a sense of

determination for next year, was watching my

show reel. Seeing all of my work compiled

together was a very proud moment and made

me even more determined to do well in the third

year.

Personal qualities you would like to develop

Why would this help you?

Reflect on how to achieve it

1.

Time management

Managing my time better would ease the stresses and strains of university. To be aware of what deadlines are coming up when and to forward plan.

Keep using my diary. And to check that I am

definitely free and available when agreeing to

help on projects, as I have double booked

myself a few times in the last year which caused

a bit of stress.

2.

Organisation

If I were more organised I would be less stressed. It would be easier to locate things that I need and would save a lot of time that I am currently wasting.

Keeping things filed would be much easier for

me to find and locate certain notes that I need

for research. Highlighting certain quotes or

phrases. Also having separate notebooks for the

different modules.

3.

The ability to relax inside, as well as the outside.

Wouldn't feel so drained or ill all the time with nerves and apprehension.

Find a way of relaxing that can benefit my health

rather than hinder it (smoking). Address

confidence issues, rather than using humor to

mask it.

4.

Motivation

Though I have improved a lot from last year, I still have lows with no motivation whatsoever. If I were to keep motivated I would have work done on time, thus relieving stress.

Exercise. Don't just go into a slump after working

hard for a while. Keep momentum up. I could

probably eat more fruit and veg too.
